Reference-object workflow for consistent product mockups

Re-describing the product in every prompt makes it drift. This four-step loop passes the subject as a reference image and varies only the scene, so a variant grid stays usable as a set.

Most prompt sets fail on consistency rather than on quality: the same bottle, shoe or carton comes back slightly different in every render, so nothing works as a set. This workflow takes the subject out of the text prompt and puts it in a reference image instead.

Steps

  1. Lock the subject. Shoot or export one clean, evenly lit reference of the product on a neutral background. This single file is the only thing that defines the subject.
  2. Write a scene-only prompt. Describe lighting, surface, camera angle and mood — never the product itself. Keep each prompt under about 60 words.
  3. Generate a variant grid. Run the same reference against four to six scene prompts in one pass, so the scene is the only variable.
  4. Cull on silhouette first. Reject anything where the product outline shifted, before you judge the lighting. Consistency beats novelty.

Tooling that accepts a reference image plus an editing prompt, rather than a text-only prompt field, shortens this loop considerably. I run the pass on nanobanana2lite.tools, a third-party independent tool site built on Google's image models.

Two failure modes worth knowing: transparent and highly reflective subjects drift the most, so keep them on a stated surface colour; and keep the object out of the prompt text, because describing it there as well reintroduces exactly the drift the reference was meant to remove.
