NOT for ordinary docs; use documenting-code.\",\"name\":\"writing-skills\"}
\n
Writing Skills
\n
Create or reshape a skill so it loads at the right time, gives the model the\nresult and the finish line, and ships intact to every target. The same rules\napply to agent bodies and other AI-facing instruction files; the\nreviewing-instructions skill scores against them.
\n
Done when the skill meets the shape and writing rules below, the rendered Claude\nskill still holds the base body and its reference links, and the relevant\nbuild/test/lint checks pass on what you changed, or you name each check that did\nnot run and why.
\n
Without write access, return proposed changes (file, change, reason) instead of\napplying them.
\n
References
\n
\n

references/skill-principles.md
— read when choosing invocation mode,\nsplitting or merging skills, or pruning a long skill.
\n

references/repo-conventions.md
— read before touching package JSON,\noverlays, target-only tokens, generated output, or evals in this repo.
\n
\n
Shape
\n
These follow the agentskills.io specification:
\n
\n

name
: lowercase kebab-case, at most 64 characters, matching the directory.
\n

description
: at most 1024 characters, saying what the skill does, when to\nuse it, and what it is NOT for, naming the neighbor skill to use instead. One\ntrigger per branch; no synonym piles.
\n

SKILL.md
body at most 500 lines (about 5k tokens); most skills need far less.
\n
Conditional detail lives in
references/
, linked directly from
SKILL.md
\nwith when to read it. No reference chains.
\n
Deterministic operations live in
scripts/
, not in prose.
\n
The skill is self-contained: name another skill when handing off, but do not\nlink into its files.
\n
\n
Writing rules
\n
\n
State the result, the constraints, and what done means. Number steps only\nwhere order is a real constraint: safety gates, deterministic tooling, apply\nflows.
\n
Cut what the model already knows: language idioms, textbook debugging, what a\ncommit or test is, \"read the code first\".
\n
Keep what is local, non-obvious, opinionated, version-gated, or costly to\nrediscover.
\n
Hard constraints are short and explicit and may be negative: secrets,\ndestructive commands, prod apply, release publishing, external actions. Write\npreferences as positive statements.
\n
Use plain statements. Skip ALL-CAPS emphasis, \"MANDATORY\", and \"think step by\nstep / carefully\"; reasoning effort is a runtime setting.
\n
State each rule once. The body does not restate the description's NOT-for\nlist. Required checks appear once; after they pass, repeat them only after a\nchange or failure.
\n
Name no specific model versions. Put a tier alias (
inherit
,
sonnet
,\n
haiku
) in a sidecar only where the harness needs a value.
\n
Headers, lists, and code blocks carry structure. Use a table when it is the\nclearest form.
\n
Specify an output shape only when another tool or agent parses it.
\n
A skill that changes code ends with the done line below instead of long\nverification or final-response sections. A skill that may run in a read-only\nrole carries the read-only line.
\n
\n

Done when the relevant build/test/lint checks pass on what you changed, or you name each check that did not run and why.\nWithout write access, return proposed changes (file, change, reason) instead of applying them.\n

\n
Overlays
\n
Keep the base
SKILL.md
vendor-neutral. For target-only content, end the base\nwith a short neutral heading such as
## Platform additions
and one generic\nsentence, then patch that heading from
.agentbundler/targets/<target>.json
\nwith
bodyPatch.mode: \"sections\"
. Use
mode: \"replace\"
only for a deliberate\nfull fork: it discards the whole base body, including its reference links.\n
references/repo-conventions.md
has the patch mechanics.
\n
Output
\n

## Skill Change\n\n- `path` — created | changed | proposed: <what and why>\n\nRouting: model-invoked | user-invoked; triggers <terms>; NOT for <neighbors or none>\nChecks: <check>: passed | failed | not run (<reason>)\nFollow-up: <scoring run, docs update, or none>\n

\n","files":[{"path":"references/repo-conventions.md","sizeBytes":3189,"isText":true},{"path":"references/skill-principles.md","sizeBytes":2146,"isText":true},{"path":"SKILL.md","sizeBytes":4476,"isText":true}],"reviewScore":null,"reviewSummary":null,"trust":{"provenance":"trusted-source-unreviewed","notice":"Community-authored content, reproduced verbatim and not vetted as instructions.
