Activate whenever the agent needs to explore, understand, or modify a codebase that has trace-mcp indexed.</h2>\n<h1>trace-mcp — Code Intelligence Routing</h1>\n<p>trace-mcp is a framework-aware code intelligence MCP server. It exposes 120+ tools that return semantic, structured results over a cross-language dependency graph. When trace-mcp is available, it is almost always cheaper and more accurate than native file tools.</p>\n<h2>When to Use</h2>\n<p>Activate this skill whenever you need to:</p>\n<ul>\n<li>Find a function, class, method, route, component, or any symbol</li>\n<li>Understand a file, module, or feature before editing</li>\n<li>Determine what breaks if you change something</li>\n<li>Trace a request flow, call graph, or data flow</li>\n<li>Audit architecture, dead code, tests, or security</li>\n</ul>\n<p><strong>Do not use</strong> <code>Read</code>, <code>Grep</code>, <code>Glob</code>, or shell <code>ls</code>/<code>find</code>/<code>cat</code>/<code>head</code>/<code>tail</code> for exploring source code (<code>.ts</code>, <code>.js</code>, <code>.py</code>, <code>.php</code>, <code>.go</code>, <code>.rb</code>, <code>.java</code>, etc.). Use trace-mcp tools instead. Native tools stay allowed only for non-code files (<code>.md</code>, <code>.json</code>, <code>.yaml</code>, configs) or immediately before an <code>Edit</code> on a known file.</p>\n<h2>Start-of-Session Checklist</h2>\n<ol>\n<li><code>get_project_map</code> with <code>summary_only=true</code> — orient yourself to the project structure</li>\n<li><code>get_task_context</code> with <code>task: \"&lt;natural-language description&gt;\"</code> — gather all relevant code in a single call instead of chaining <code>search</code> → <code>get_symbol</code> → <code>Read</code></li>\n</ol>\n<h2>Decision Matrix</h2>\n<table>\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th>Task</th>\n<th>trace-mcp tool</th>\n<th>Instead of</th>\n</tr>\n</thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Find a symbol by name</td>\n<td><code>search</code></td>\n<td>Grep</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Understand a file before editing</td>\n<td><code>get_outline</code></td>\n<td>Read (full file)</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Read one symbol's source</td>\n<td><code>get_symbol</code></td>\n<td>Read (full file)</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Multiple symbols + shared imports</td>\n<td><code>get_context_bundle</code></td>\n<td>chained <code>get_symbol</code></td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>What breaks if I change X</td>\n<td><code>get_change_impact</code></td>\n<td>guessing</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Who calls this / what does it call</td>\n<td><code>get_call_graph</code></td>\n<td>Grep</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>All usages of a symbol</td>\n<td><code>find_usages</code></td>\n<td>Grep</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Implementations of an interface</td>\n<td><code>get_type_hierarchy</code></td>\n<td>Grep / ls</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Classes implementing X</td>\n<td><code>search</code> with <code>implements</code> filter</td>\n<td>Grep</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Tests for a symbol or file</td>\n<td><code>get_tests_for</code></td>\n<td>Glob + Grep</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Project overview</td>\n<td><code>get_project_map</code> (summary_only)</td>\n<td>Bash ls/find</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Context for a task</td>\n<td><code>get_task_context</code> / <code>get_feature_context</code></td>\n<td>reading many files</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>HTTP request flow</td>\n<td><code>get_request_flow</code></td>\n<td>reading route + controller files</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>DB model relationships</td>\n<td><code>get_model_context</code></td>\n<td>reading model + migrations</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Component tree</td>\n<td><code>get_component_tree</code></td>\n<td>reading component files</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Circular dependencies</td>\n<td><code>get_circular_imports</code></td>\n<td>manual tracing</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Dead code / dead exports</td>\n<td><code>get_dead_code</code> / <code>get_dead_exports</code></td>\n<td>Grep for unused</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Project health / coverage gaps</td>\n<td><code>self_audit</code></td>\n<td>manual inspection</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Complexity / hotspots</td>\n<td><code>get_complexity_report</code> / <code>get_risk_hotspots</code></td>\n<td>guessing</td>\n</tr>\n</tbody>\n</table>\n<h2>Token-Efficiency Rules</h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Batch independent queries.</strong> Use <code>batch</code> when you need 2+ independent tool calls:\n<pre><code>batch({ calls: [\n { tool: \"get_outline\", args: { path: \"src/foo.ts\" } },\n { tool: \"get_outline\", args: { path: \"src/bar.ts\" } },\n { tool: \"search\", args: { query: \"handleRequest\", kind: \"function\" } }\n]})\n</code></pre>\n</li>\n<li><strong>Never read the same file twice.</strong> Use <code>get_outline</code> once, then <code>get_symbol</code> for specific pieces.</li>\n<li><strong>Prefer <code>get_context_bundle</code></strong> over chained <code>get_symbol</code> calls — it deduplicates shared imports.</li>\n<li><strong>Read-before-Edit optimization.</strong> When you must <code>Read</code> a file to edit it:\n<ul>\n<li>Call <code>get_outline</code> first to find the line range of the target symbol.</li>\n<li>Read only that range with <code>offset</code> + <code>limit</code>. Never read a 500-line file to edit 5 lines.</li>\n</ul>\n</li>\n<li><strong>Do not delegate code exploration to subagents.</strong> Agent subprocesses carry ~50k tokens of overhead before doing anything. Use trace-mcp tools in the main conversation instead.</li>\n</ol>\n<h2>After Editing a File</h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Call <code>register_edit</code> with the edited <code>file_path</code> to reindex just that file and invalidate caches. This is much lighter than a full <code>reindex</code> and keeps subsequent queries accurate.</li>\n<li>If the response includes <code>_duplication_warnings</code>, review the referenced symbols — you may be duplicating existing logic.</li>\n<li>Do <strong>not</strong> re-read the file to \"verify\" the edit. The <code>Edit</code> tool already confirmed success.</li>\n</ul>\n<h2>Before Creating New Symbols</h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Call <code>check_duplication</code> with <code>{ name, kind }</code> to verify no similar symbol exists. Prevents reinventing existing logic.</li>\n</ul>\n<h2>Health Checks (Once Per Session)</h2>\n<ul>\n<li><code>audit_config</code> — stale references in CLAUDE.md / settings</li>\n<li><code>self_audit</code> — dead exports, untested code, hotspots</li>\n<li><code>get_tech_debt</code> — per-module tech-debt grades</li>\n<li><code>get_optimization_report</code> — detects repeated reads, Bash grep usage, missed trace-mcp opportunities</li>\n</ul>\n<h2>Related Skills</h2>\n<ul>\n<li><code>trace-mcp-refactoring</code> — safe refactoring workflow (risk assessment → rename → impact check)</li>\n<li><code>trace-mcp-codemod</code> — bulk mechanical changes via <code>apply_codemod</code></li>\n<li><code>trace-mcp-pre-commit</code> — security, quality-gate, and antipattern checks before commit</li>\n</ul>\n","files":[{"path":"SKILL.md","sizeBytes":6305,"isText":true}],"reviewScore":null,"reviewSummary":null,"trust":{"provenance":"trusted-source-unreviewed","notice":"Community-authored content, reproduced verbatim and not vetted as instructions.
