For older code, use the BodyMover migration table below.
\n
Core concepts
\n
Assemblies
\n
An assembly is one or more parts connected by rigid welds or movable joints, simulated as a single rigid body.
\n
Key
BasePart
properties (same for any part in the assembly):
\n
\n

AssemblyLinearVelocity
/
AssemblyAngularVelocity
: prefer constraints or
ApplyImpulse
over direct assignment for realistic motion.
\n

AssemblyCenterOfMass
: force here produces pure linear acceleration.
\n

AssemblyMass
: sum of all part masses; infinite if any part is anchored.
\n

AssemblyRootPart
: automatically chosen root for replication and network ownership.
\n
\n
Root-part priority: anchored > non-massless > higher
RootPriority
> size/name heuristics.
\n
Anchoring
\n
\n
Anchoring one part in an assembly makes it the root; the rest are implicitly anchored.
\n
Anchoring multiple parts in the same assembly splits it.
\n
To anchor an entire assembly, only anchor the root part.
\n
\n
Collision filtering
\n
Use collision groups (
Workspace:RegisterCollisionGroup
(inherited from
WorldRoot
),
BasePart.CollisionGroup
) or
NoCollisionConstraint
for part-to-part filtering.
CanCollide
,
CanTouch
, and
CanQuery
control different behaviors; see references/collisions-and-filtering.md.
\n
Mechanical constraints
\n
All mechanical constraints connect one or two
Attachment
s (or
Bone
s), except
WeldConstraint
and
NoCollisionConstraint
which use
Part0
/
Part1
.
\n
\n
\n
\n
Constraint
\n
Use case
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n

WeldConstraint

\n
Rigidly lock two parts together, same relative transform
\n
\n
\n

RigidConstraint

\n
Same as WeldConstraint but attachment-based, supports bones
\n
\n
\n

HingeConstraint

\n
Doors, levers, rotating parts; Reset with
SetNetworkOwnershipAuto()
.
\n
Assign vehicle/driver ownership carefully: the first seated player may own the whole assembly otherwise.
\n
\n
Security: clients can exploit owned parts (teleport, fake collisions). Validate gameplay-critical events server-side. See references/network-ownership.md.
\n
Sleep system
\n
Assemblies stop simulating when still to save performance. They wake on collisions, property changes, impulses, or gravity/wind changes.
\n
\n
If a slow mechanism falls asleep, increase motion or use actuated joints (motor/servo constraints) which get stricter sleep thresholds.
\n
Visualize sleep states with Awake parts in Studio's Visualization Options.
\n
\n
Physics stepping method
\n
Workspace.PhysicsSteppingMethod:
\n
\n
Fixed (default, 240 Hz): best general choice; use for racing, destruction, tanks, or when most parts already solve at 240 Hz.
\n
Adaptive: assigns assemblies to 60/120/240 Hz islands for up to ~2.5× performance in suitable experiences.
\n
\n
Use the MicroProfiler to check island distribution.
\n
Units quick reference
\n
\n
\n
\n
Roblox
\n
Metric
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
1 stud
\n
28 cm
\n
\n
\n
1 RMU
\n
21.952 kg
\n
\n
\n
196.2 studs/s²
\n
default \"Classic\" gravity
\n
\n
\n
35 studs/s²
\n
\"Realistic\" gravity (≈ 9.8 m/s²)
\n
\n
\n
\n
See references/units-and-physical-properties.md.
\n
Common mistakes
\n
\n
Using deprecated
BodyMover
s instead of modern constraints.
\n
Setting
CFrame
every frame instead of using forces/constraints.
\n
Anchoring every part in an assembly (splits it and hurts performance).
\n
Ignoring network ownership on vehicles and then wondering why input lags.
\n
Trusting
Touched
events from client-owned parts for damage/authority.
\n
Letting actuated joints fall asleep prematurely.
\n
\n
Scripts
\n
\n

scripts/VehicleController.lua
: chassis setup with
HingeConstraint
steering and motor drive, with client ownership and server validation.
\n

scripts/DoorHinge.lua
: motorized/servo door with limits and state machine.
\n

scripts/PlatformMover.lua
:
AlignPosition
+
AlignOrientation
platform with configurable waypoints.
\n

scripts/Suspension.lua
: spring-damper suspension using
SpringConstraint
.
\n
\n
How to proceed
\n
\n
Decide if the object is a rigid mechanism (mechanical constraint) or force-driven (mover constraint).
\n
Plan assemblies, root parts, and anchoring strategy.
\n
Set network ownership for multiplayer responsiveness.
\n
Tune forces/velocities using units and physical properties.
\n
Profile with MicroProfiler and watch sleep/ownership visualizations.
\n
\n\n
Reference index
\n
\n
collisions-and-filtering.md: Configure collision groups, touch events, or spatial query filters.
\n
mechanical-constraints.md: Connect parts with hinges, springs, ropes, or other mechanical constraints.
\n
mover-constraints.md: Apply forces or velocity targets, or migrate BodyMover code.
\n
network-ownership.md: Assign physics simulation to the server or a player and debug ownership.
\n
units-and-physical-properties.md: Tune mass, density, friction, force, or simulation stepping.
\n
\n\n","files":[{"path":"references/collisions-and-filtering.md","sizeBytes":2355,"isText":true},{"path":"references/mechanical-constraints.md","sizeBytes":4052,"isText":true},{"path":"references/mover-constraints.md","sizeBytes":3961,"isText":true},{"path":"references/network-ownership.md","sizeBytes":2668,"isText":true},{"path":"references/units-and-physical-properties.md","sizeBytes":1743,"isText":true},{"path":"scripts/DoorHinge.lua","sizeBytes":2172,"isText":false},{"path":"scripts/PlatformMover.lua","sizeBytes":4392,"isText":false},{"path":"scripts/Suspension.lua","sizeBytes":1345,"isText":false},{"path":"scripts/VehicleController.lua","sizeBytes":6137,"isText":false},{"path":"SKILL.md","sizeBytes":7969,"isText":true}],"reviewScore":null,"reviewSummary":null,"trust":{"provenance":"trusted-source-unreviewed","notice":"Community-authored content, reproduced verbatim and not vetted as instructions.
