Choose the right data structure</h2>\n<p>Pick the type that matches the <em>access pattern</em>, not just the shape of the data.</p>\n<table>\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th>Use case</th>\n<th>Recommended type</th>\n<th>Why</th>\n</tr>\n</thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Simple values, counters</td>\n<td>String</td>\n<td>Atomic <code>INCR</code>/<code>DECR</code>, <code>SET</code>/<code>GET</code></td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Object with independently updated fields</td>\n<td>Hash</td>\n<td>Per-field reads/writes, no whole-object rewrite</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Queue, recent-N items</td>\n<td>List</td>\n<td>O(1) push/pop at ends</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Unique items, membership checks</td>\n<td>Set</td>\n<td>O(1) <code>SADD</code>/<code>SISMEMBER</code>/<code>SCARD</code></td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Rankings, score-based ranges</td>\n<td>Sorted Set</td>\n<td>Score-ordered; <code>ZADD</code>/<code>ZRANGE</code>/<code>ZRANK</code></td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Nested / hierarchical data</td>\n<td>JSON</td>\n<td>Path-level updates, nested arrays, RQE indexing</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Event log, fan-out messaging</td>\n<td>Stream</td>\n<td>Persistent, consumer groups</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Vector similarity</td>\n<td>Vector Set</td>\n<td>Native vector storage with HNSW</td>\n</tr>\n</tbody>\n</table>\n<p><strong>Common anti-pattern:</strong> stuffing a flat object into a serialized string. Updating one field means fetch + parse + mutate + rewrite.
