Reproduce failures,\ncite evidence, and use optional Amp subagents only when useful.
\n
Investigate Bug
\n
Investigate Elixir/Phoenix bugs root-cause first. Reproduce or establish the\nfailing behavior before recommending a fix, and cite concrete paths and lines.
\n
Usage
\n

phx-investigate Users can't log in after password reset\nphx-investigate FunctionClauseError in UserController.show\nphx-investigate Complex auth bug --parallel\n

\n
Treat the text after the skill name as the bug description.
--parallel
asks\nfor independent investigation tracks when native Amp subagent tooling is\navailable; it is an optimization, never a requirement.
\n
Iron Laws
\n
\n
Read the error literally first — extract the exception, message, failing\nassertion, and first relevant application frame before theorizing.
\n
Check the obvious before going deep — compile errors, missing migrations,\natom/string mismatches, nil values, stale servers, and changeset errors explain\nmany failures.
\n
Reproduce before proposing a fix — run the smallest relevant test or\ncontrolled command and record its output. If reproduction is impossible,\nstate exactly what evidence establishes the failure instead.
\n
Confirm the root cause with evidence — distinguish the observed failure,\nthe causal code path, and the proposed correction.
\n
Do not edit while investigating unless the user asks for a fix — the\ninvestigation result is evidence and a recommendation, not an implicit patch.
\n
\n
Workflow
\n
1. Consult Existing Evidence
\n
Search
.claude/solutions/
, recent diffs, tests, logs, and the literal error.\nDo not block if
.claude/solutions/
does not exist.
\n
2. Capture Runtime Context When Available
\n
Tidewave is optional. If its tools are configured, use them for logs, source\nlocations, safe queries, or hypothesis checks. Otherwise use repository files,\n
mix
commands, and local logs. Never fail or ask the user to install Tidewave\nmerely to continue an investigation.
\n
3. Run Sanity Checks
\n
Choose focused checks that fit the report, such as:
\n

mix compile --warnings-as-errors\nmix test test/path_test.exs --trace\n

\n
Do not run migrations or other state-changing commands unless they are necessary,\nsafe for the fixture, and authorized by the user.
\n
4. Reproduce Before Fixing
\n
Capture the exact command, failure, and relevant output. Read\n
references/error-patterns.md
, then inspect only the code needed to trace the\nfailure from entry point to cause.
\n
5. Check the Obvious
\n
Check saved files, atom/string keys, preload state, pattern matches, nil values,\nreturn values, server restarts, and changeset errors. For silent LiveView form\nfailures, inspect
{:error, changeset}
and rendered validation errors before JS.
\n
6. Trace and Test the Hypothesis
\n
Use targeted searches, source reads, tests, or non-mutating diagnostics. Only add\ntemporary source diagnostics if the user explicitly authorizes edits, and remove\nthem before reporting. Cite
path:line
evidence for both the failing behavior\nand the causal code.
\n
If native Amp subagents are available and the bug genuinely spans independent\nareas, delegate read-only tracks by concern. Otherwise perform the same tracks\nsequentially in this session. Do not require named custom agents.
\n
7. Report
\n
Use
references/investigation-template.md
. Include:
\n
\n
reproduction or evidence establishing the failure;
\n
root cause, not merely the symptom;
\n
relevant paths and lines;
\n
confidence and any unverified assumptions;
\n
the smallest safe fix or next diagnostic step.
\n
\n
Route follow-up work with
phx-quick
,
phx-plan
, or
phx-compound
when\nappropriate. Do not invoke another skill unless the user asks you to continue.
\n
References
\n
\n

references/error-patterns.md
— common errors and checklist
\n

references/investigation-template.md
— output format
\n

references/debug-commands.md
— debug commands and common fixes
\n
\n
Amp native parallel investigation
\n
For a non-trivial failure with independent reproduction, root-cause, impact,\nand fix-strategy questions, call
elixir_phoenix_parallel_investigate
once.\nIts four local child threads are enforced read-only (
Read
and
finder
only).\nReconcile their output in this parent thread and verify every claimed evidence\npath before editing. If the tool is unavailable or a child fails, run only the\nmissing track sequentially. Simple failures should stay sequential.
\n","files":[{"path":"references/debug-commands.md","sizeBytes":1999,"isText":true},{"path":"references/error-patterns.md","sizeBytes":1469,"isText":true},{"path":"references/investigation-template.md","sizeBytes":998,"isText":true},{"path":"SKILL.md","sizeBytes":4550,"isText":true}],"reviewScore":null,"reviewSummary":null,"trust":{"provenance":"trusted-source-unreviewed","notice":"Community-authored content, reproduced verbatim and not vetted as instructions.
