Use when long mix output floods context.\neffort: low
\n
Mix Output Compression
\n
Mix commands (
mix test
,
mix credo
,
mix dialyzer
,
mix compile
) emit\nverbose, repetitive output that consumes context fast. This skill installs\nrtk — a CLI proxy that filters tool output\nbefore it lands in the transcript.
\n
The filters short-circuit happy paths to a single line (
mix test: all pass
)\nwhile preserving full failure blocks, compile errors, and stack traces. Net win:\n5-15% per-session token reduction on mix-heavy workflows.
\n
When to use
\n
\n
Long sessions —
/phx:work
or
/phx:full
hitting context limits from mix output
\n
Debugging loops —
/phx:investigate
retrying
mix compile
/
mix test
repeatedly
\n
Dialyzer-heavy projects —
mix dialyzer
output dominates the transcript
\n
\n
Iron Laws
\n
\n
NEVER strip critical signals — compile errors (
** (CompileError)
,\n
== Compilation error in
), test failures (
FAILURES
,
0 failures
— preserved\neven on short-circuit), dialyzer warnings, and stack traces with
file:line
MUST\npass through unchanged
\n
Verify after install — run
rtk verify
(or
rtk verify --filter mix-test
) to\nconfirm the bundled test fixtures pass before declaring success
\n
Never overwrite existing
.rtk/filters.toml
— diff and merge instead
\n
\n
Workflow
\n
Step 1: Detect rtk
\n

which rtk && rtk --version\n

\n
Read
${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/references/install.md
if rtk is missing — covers\nhomebrew install + shell hook setup.
\n
Step 2: Seed
.rtk/filters.toml

\n
Reference filters live at
${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/references/rtk-filters.toml
. Six\nproduction-tested filters covering:
\n
\n

mix-test
— short-circuits all-pass, preserves failure blocks + compile errors
\n

mix-credo
— collapses clean runs, preserves violation blocks
\n

mix-dialyzer
— drops PLT progress, keeps warnings + summary
\n

mix-deps-get
— collapses unchanged package lists
\n

mix-ecto-migrate
— strips compile prefix, short-circuits \"already up\"
\n

mix-compile
— handles parallel worker prefixes (
N>
) and MIX_ENV
\n
\n
Run this if the project has no
.rtk/filters.toml
yet:
\n

mkdir -p .rtk\ncp \"${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/references/rtk-filters.toml\" .rtk/filters.toml\n

\n
Read both files if one already exists. Present a diff to the user. Merge only\nthe filters they don't already have.
\n
Step 3: Verify filters work
\n

rtk verify # runs all embedded [[tests.*]] fixtures\nrtk verify --filter mix-test # one filter only\n

\n
Check that all report \"passed\". Flag and stop if any fail — usually means the\nuser has a custom rtk version with regex differences.
\n
Step 4: Confirm shell hook
\n
Run
rtk init zsh
(or
rtk init bash
) to install the transparent rewrite hook\nthat turns
mix X
into
rtk mix X
. Re-running is safe (idempotent). Skip this\nstep and
mix
calls run unfiltered.
\n
Customization
\n
Add custom regex patterns to
strip_lines_matching
for project-specific noise\nsources (e.g., third-party hex deps spamming stack traces). See the inline\nexample in
${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/references/rtk-filters.toml
lines 57-59.
\n
What this is NOT
\n
\n
Not a hook — Claude Code's
PostToolUse
hooks fire after the tool result\nis in the transcript and cannot shrink it. rtk works at the subprocess layer\n(the only layer where transcript-shortening is possible).
\n
Not project-analysis — the bundled filter set is universal across Phoenix\nprojects. No
mix.exs
inspection needed.
\n
Not telemetry — rtk has telemetry off by default (
enabled = false
in\n
config.toml
). Filters run locally, no data leaves the machine.
\n
\n
References
\n
\n

${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/references/rtk-filters.toml
— bundled filter set
\n

${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/references/install.md
— rtk install + shell hook setup
\n
rtk on GitHub
\n
\n","files":[{"path":"references/install.md","sizeBytes":3371,"isText":true},{"path":"references/rtk-filters.toml","sizeBytes":16011,"isText":true},{"path":"SKILL.md","sizeBytes":4143,"isText":true}],"reviewScore":null,"reviewSummary":null,"trust":{"provenance":"trusted-source-unreviewed","notice":"Community-authored content, reproduced verbatim and not vetted as instructions.
