Anything that must survive their absence needs a\ndurable queue row; the gateway turns the human blocker on that row into the\nexternal notification.
\n
Any seat may contact the human directly for a real escalation. Orchestrators\nand product managers may also send updates they judge the human would want to\nknow. Do not add a routing intermediary merely because of your role.
\n
The supported route
\n
First discover the registered human identity. Never invent or remember an\naddress:
\n

rig gateway human list --json\n

\n
Use
humans[].entityId
to derive the durable blocker as
<entityId>@host
.\nThe entity id must use the human-seat prefix (
human
or
human-...
); if it\ndoes not, stop and repair the registration rather than guessing. The returned\n
humans[].address
is the gateway delivery address, not the
--on
value. If no\nunambiguous registered human is returned, stop: registration is lifecycle work\n(
rig gateway human add --help
), not an address to guess.
\n
Keep the work row owned by the agent who must resume it, then park that row on\nthe registered human:
\n

rig queue block <qitem-id> --on <entityId>@host \\\n --summary \"<decision owed>\" \\\n --evidence-ref \"<durable artifact the human should judge>\" \\\n --continuation \"<what resumes after the answer>\"\n

\n
The gateway resolves the registered human to the configured connector, sends\nthe Slack notification, and records its receipt on the same row. Confirm the\neffect from the append-only history:
\n

rig queue transitions <qitem-id>\n

\n
The row is the obligation and the audit trail. Slack is the attention leg. A\nreply resolves the durable blocker and wakes the row owner; it does not create\na second private work stream.
\n
When to use it
\n
Escalate directly when only the human can supply the missing capability:
\n
\n
a decision or irreversible judgment only they own;
\n
access, credentials, authority, or capacity only they can grant;
\n
an external action only they can perform;
\n
a security-class or provider/model-fallback event they need to know about.
\n
\n
Orchestrators and product managers may additionally send meaningful milestone,\nenvironment, or completion updates. Prefer signal over routine narration.
\n
Boundaries
\n
\n

rig send
sends text to an agent's terminal. It is not the Slack route and\ndoes not create a durable human obligation.
\n
An unregistered or ambiguous human identity must fail loudly. Register or\nrepair the identity; never downgrade it to an agent seat or a guessed\n
@external
address.
\n
Agent-to-agent work that needs closure uses
rig queue handoff
, not this\nhuman-blocker path.
\n
Deferred work that is not imminent belongs in the mission workspace, not on\nthe queue.
\n
\n
Writing the escalation
\n
Lead with what is blocked and the exact decision or action needed. Point at the\ndurable evidence instead of pasting a second copy, and name the continuation so\nthe system can resume the right work when the answer arrives.
\n","files":[{"path":"SKILL.md","sizeBytes":5744,"isText":true}],"reviewScore":null,"reviewSummary":null,"trust":{"provenance":"trusted-source-unreviewed","notice":"Community-authored content, reproduced verbatim and not vetted as instructions.
