Use for a selected local, WSL, or direct SSH context when installing scientific packages, configuring caches, recording interpreter activation, or producing an environment smoke test. Do not use for scheduler clusters or managed cloud providers that Wisp cannot track yet.\nlicense: Apache-2.0
\n
Set up a compute environment
\n
Treat the selected and probed
ExecutionContext
as authoritative. Wisp\ncurrently supports
local
,
wsl:<distro>
, and direct
ssh:<alias>
contexts;\nit does not expose an authenticated provider SDK inside Python.
\n
Plan the environment
\n
Define before installing:
\n
\n
Python or R version;
\n
ordered conda/pip/R package phases with important pins;
\n
required CUDA capability and minimum VRAM;
\n
cache variables and durable weight locations;
\n
import checks, CLI checks, and one seeded representative workload;
\n
the exact activation command later Runs must include.
\n
\n
Use
references/envs_reference.md
for package-order and cache examples, but\nreplace container-specific paths with paths valid on the selected context.
\n
Direct SSH workflow
\n
\n
Require a selected
ssh:<alias>
context with a recent Probe result. Respect\nrecorded GPU, privilege, interpreter, conda/mamba, module, and scheduler\ncapabilities.
\n
If a scheduler is detected, stop. Do not install or run long work on a\nshared login node; Wisp needs a scheduler-aware Run backend first.
\n
Use at most a few bounded read-only
shell
commands to confirm free space,\nexisting environments, and cache paths.
\n
Write an idempotent project script such as\n
runs/setup-<environment>.sh
. It must use user-writable paths, fail fast,\nactivate the environment explicitly, run all smoke checks, and write a\nsmall JSON manifest only after validation succeeds.
\n
Submit the setup script through one persisted Run:
\n
\n

{\n \"context_id\": \"ssh:gpu-box\",\n \"title\": \"Set up singlecell environment\",\n \"command\": \"bash setup-singlecell.sh /home/me/envs/singlecell /home/me/wisp-env-manifests/singlecell.json\",\n \"timeout_secs\": 14400,\n \"input_paths\": [\"runs/setup-singlecell.sh\"],\n \"output_specs\": [\n {\n \"glob\": \"ssh://gpu-box/home/me/wisp-env-manifests/singlecell.json\",\n \"kind\": \"environment-manifest\",\n \"residency\": \"remote\"\n }\n ]\n}\n

\n
\n
Replace all example paths with probed absolute paths. Call
monitor_run
\nwhen waiting is useful (again after
wait_interrupted
; do not resubmit).\nUse one
get_run
snapshot later or
cancel_run
when requested.
\n
Record the validated activation command, versions, cache paths, GPU witness,\ndate, and known limitations in a normal project file such as\n
environments/<context>/<name>.md
. This file is documentation, not a hidden\nresolver.
\n
\n
Setup-script requirements
\n
\n
Make repeated execution safe: reuse a matching environment or stop with an\nactionable version mismatch.
\n
Keep pip install phases ordered; a later dependency resolver must not silently\nreplace pinned torch, CUDA, JAX, NumPy, or compiled extensions.
\n
Never use
sudo
unless the Probe explicitly records suitable privilege and\nthe user authorizes it. Prefer conda packages, modules, or user paths.
\n
Put multi-gigabyte weights in durable remote storage. Populate them with the\nmodel's real loader, verify non-empty content and completion markers, then run\na representative inference witness.
\n
Write the manifest atomically only after imports, GPU visibility, and the\nrepresentative workload pass.
\n
\n
Local and WSL boundary
\n
Local and WSL Runs are currently capped at 300 seconds and do not support\n
input_paths
. Use
local-env-setup
for normal interactive setup. Use\n
run_in_context
only for a bounded command that finishes within that limit and\nwrites outputs to host-visible project paths.
\n
Unsupported backends
\n
Wisp has no scheduler, Modal, RunPod, cloud Batch, container-service, or managed\nendpoint execution context today. Do not invent a provider id or hide those\nlifecycles inside an SSH submission command. Explain the boundary or use a\ndedicated direct SSH host until a backend implementing submit, poll, cancel,\nrecovery, secrets, and artifact harvest exists.
\n","files":[{"path":"references/envs_reference.md","sizeBytes":5559,"isText":true},{"path":"SKILL.md","sizeBytes":4284,"isText":true}],"reviewScore":null,"reviewSummary":null,"trust":{"provenance":"trusted-source-unreviewed","notice":"Community-authored content, reproduced verbatim and not vetted as instructions.
