What it cannot decide is whether the target\norigin or path is one you trust — and a raw\n
new Response(null, { status: 302, headers: { location: userInput } })
\nbypasses all of those guards entirely.
\n
Prerequisites:
pracht inspect
requires a vite config that registers the\npracht plugin.
\n
Step 1: Inventory redirect sites
\n
Bound the search first — do not grep the whole repo blind:
\n

pracht inspect routes --json\n

\n
MCP: when the pracht MCP server is registered (
pracht dev-mcp
), prefer its\n
inspect_routes
/
inspect_api
/
inspect_build
/
doctor
/
verify
tools over\nshelling out.
\n
The resolved graph gives you each route's
file
,
loaderFile
, and\n
middleware
names (resolve names to files via the
defineApp({ middleware })
\nmap in the manifest). Grep those files plus the API handler files from\n
pracht inspect api --json
, and client components, for two distinct classes:
\n
Class A — guarded sites (scheme/CRLF-safe, still open-redirect capable):
\n
\n
Middleware/loaders/handlers returning
redirect(...)
or\n
buildRedirectResponse(...)
.
\n

useNavigate()(value)
and
<a href={value}>
where
value
is dynamic\n(client guard applies).
\n

prefetchRouteState(value)
calls with dynamic input.
\n
\n
Class B — unguarded sites (bypass every framework guard):
\n
\n
Hand-rolled 3xx
Response
s:
new Response(null, { status: 302, headers: { location: ... } })
or
headers.set(\"location\", ...)
in loaders,\nmiddleware, or API handlers. With user input these allow not just open\nredirects but also unsafe schemes and header-injection attempts — flag at\nhigher severity.
\n
\n
Step 2: Trace the input
\n
For each site, identify whether the redirect target is:
\n
\n
Static — string literal. Safe.
\n
Internal-derived — built from
params
,
route.path
, or a closed\nallowlist. Safe if the allowlist is verifiable.
\n
Request-derived — read from
url.searchParams.get(...)
,\n
request.headers.get('referer')
, request body fields, cookie values, or\nquery parameters. Suspect.
\n
\n
Common suspect names:
redirect
,
redirectTo
,
next
,
returnTo
,
continue
,\n
url
,
dest
,
goto
.
\n
Step 3: Check the gate
\n
For each request-derived target, look for one of:
\n
\n
\n
\n
Gate
\n
Safe?
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
Hardcoded allowlist of paths/origins
\n
Yes
\n
\n
\n

new URL(target, base).origin === url.origin

\n
Yes — origin comparison
\n
\n
\n

target.startsWith('/')
AND
!target.startsWith('//')

\n
Bypassable (
/\\evil.example
)
\n
\n
\n

new URL(target).hostname === expected

\n
Yes if
expected
is trusted
\n
\n
\n
No check
\n
Open redirect
\n
\n
\n

target.includes(domain)
(substring)
\n
Bypassable (
evil.com#yourdomain.com
)
\n
\n
\n
Regex without anchors
\n
Likely bypassable
\n
\n
\n
\n
Prefix checks are not sufficient.
//evil.example/path
is\nprotocol-relative, and URL parsing turns
\\
into
/
and strips tabs and\nnewlines, so
/\\evil.example
and
/\\t/evil.example
pass\n
startsWith('/') && !startsWith('//')
yet land on another origin. Only an\norigin comparison after
new URL(target, url)
is a real gate.
\n
Remember:
redirect()
's built-in validation covers scheme and CRLF only — it\nhappily redirects to any well-formed
http(s)
origin, so Class A sites still\nneed an origin/path gate for request-derived targets.
\n
Step 4: Report
\n
\n
\n
\n
File:Line
\n
Class (A/B)
\n
Source
\n
Target expression
\n
Gate
\n
Severity
\n
Verdict
\n
\n
\n
\n
Severity is the primary scale; the verdict is a secondary domain label:
\n
\n

error
/
open
— request-derived target, no check. A Class B site here is\nthe worst case (no scheme/CRLF guard either) — say so explicitly.
\n

warn
/
risky
— substring/regex check; suggest URL-parse rewrite.
\n

info
/
safe
— static or properly gated. For Class B sites that are\nstatic today, still recommend migrating to
redirect()
so the scheme/CRLF\nguards apply if the target ever becomes dynamic.
\n
\n
For each
open
/
risky
finding, propose a fix snippet, e.g.:
\n

function safeRedirectPath(value: unknown, base: URL, fallback: string): string {\n  if (typeof value !== \"string\" || !value.startsWith(\"/\")) return fallback;\n  try {\n    const target = new URL(value, base);\n    return target.origin === base.origin\n      ? `${target.pathname}${target.search}${target.hash}`\n      : fallback;\n  } catch {\n    return fallback;\n  }\n}\n\nreturn redirect(safeRedirectPath(url.searchParams.get(\"redirect\"), url, \"/dashboard\"), {\n  request,\n});\n

\n
Step 5: Cross-check with the framework guards
\n
Note in the report that pracht drops
javascript:
,
data:
,
vbscript:
,\n
blob:
, and
file:
schemes both in the client router (since #122) and in\nserver-side
redirect()
/
buildRedirectResponse()
— so a guarded open\nredirect cannot become script execution. But it can still phish (redirect to\na look-alike origin) and leak session/referrer headers, and Class B raw\nResponses get none of this protection.
\n
Rules
\n
\n
Default to suspicion for any request-derived target.
\n
Recommend
URL
parsing over string prefix checks for non-trivial gates.
\n
Do not trust
referer
as a gate; it is forgeable and often stripped.
\n
After-login redirects are the most dangerous — user is authenticated.
\n
Recommend
redirect()
over hand-rolled 3xx Responses so the scheme/CRLF\nguards apply.
\n
Do not auto-fix; surface the gap and propose the patch.
\n
\n
$ARGUMENTS
\n","files":[{"path":"SKILL.md","sizeBytes":6465,"isText":true}],"reviewScore":null,"reviewSummary":null,"trust":{"provenance":"trusted-source-unreviewed","notice":"Community-authored content, reproduced verbatim and not vetted as instructions.
