Trigger on phrases like \"write pseudocode\",\n\"sketch this algorithm\", \"pseudocode for this function\", or \"describe the logic\".
\n
Pseudocode Style Guide
\n
Structure of a Function
\n
Every pseudocode function has exactly three parts: input, output, and body. Use Python-like syntax:
def
for the function signature, a docstring-style comment block for input and output, and indented body lines.
\n

def function_name(param1, param2, ...):\n    # input:  <what each param represents>\n    # output: <what the function returns or produces>\n\n    <body>\n

\n
Body Rules
\n
The body is the core of the pseudocode. Each line is a pythonic, non-functional call that names the operation and its operands -- not English prose. Invent clear, intuitive method or function names. The goal is code that reads like intent, not implementation.
\n
\n
One call per logical step.
\n
Use
object.verb(args)
or
verb(args)
style -- never English sentences.
\n
No type annotations, no real data-structure internals, no language-specific APIs.
\n
Intermediate variable names are fine when they connect two steps.
\n
Never more than one idea per line.
\n
\n
Control Flow
\n
Use
if
,
elif
,
else
, and loops sparingly and only when the branching or iteration is the point of the logic. Conditions are also written as code-like expressions, not prose.
\n

if condition_call(args):\n    ...\nelse:\n    ...\n\nfor item in collection:\n    ...\n\nwhile not done():\n    ...\n

\n
What to Write on Each Line
\n
Each line should look like a call you would recognise but cannot actually run.
\n
Good patterns:
\n
\n

nodes.filter_reachable_from(source)

\n

entries.sort_by(timestamp, order=ASC)

\n

graph.shortest_path(source)

\n

candidates.pick_highest_score()

\n

merge_sorted(left, right)

\n
\n
Bad patterns:
\n
\n

\"filter nodes by reachability from source\"
-- English sentence, not code
\n

dist[v] = dist[u] + weight(u, v)
-- actual implementation code
\n

initialize a min-heap priority queue with (0, source)
-- prose + detail
\n

list.stream().filter(x -> x > 0).collect(...)
-- real language API
\n
\n
Examples
\n
Good:
\n

def lsm_write(key, value):\n    # input:  key and value to store\n    # output: acknowledgement that write is recorded\n\n    memtable.append(key, value)\n    if memtable.exceeds_threshold():\n        sstable = memtable.flush_to_disk()\n        memtable.clear()\n

\n

def lsm_read(key):\n    # input:  key to look up\n    # output: value for key, or NOT_FOUND\n\n    if memtable.contains(key):\n        return memtable.get(key)\n    for sstable in sstables.newest_first():\n        if sstable.bloom_filter.might_contain(key):\n            value = sstable.search(key)\n            if value:\n                return value\n    return NOT_FOUND\n

\n

def lsm_compact(sstables):\n    # input:  list of SSTables to merge\n    # output: single merged SSTable with duplicates resolved\n\n    cursors = sstables.open_cursors()\n    while cursors.any_remaining():\n        entry = cursors.pick_min_key()\n        if cursors.has_duplicates(entry.key):\n            entry = cursors.keep_newest(entry.key)\n        output.write(entry)\n    return output.finalise()\n

\n
Bad (do not do this):
\n

def lsm_write(key, value):\n append key-value pair to memtable # English sentence -- wrong\n if memtable exceeds size threshold: # English condition -- wrong\n flush memtable to a new SSTable # English sentence -- wrong\n

\n

def lsm_write(key: str, value: bytes):  # typed signature + real Python -- wrong\n    self.lock.acquire()\n    self.memtable[key] = value\n    if len(self.memtable) > self.threshold:\n        self.flush()\n    self.lock.release()\n

\n
Checklist Before Writing
\n
\n
Are all body lines calls (
object.verb(args)
or
verb(args)
), not English sentences?
\n
Are invented names intuitive -- would a reader guess what they do?
\n
Are if/else conditions also written as calls or simple expressions, not prose?
\n
Is every line a single idea?
\n
\n
If yes, the pseudocode is done.
\n","files":[{"path":"SKILL.md","sizeBytes":4260,"isText":true}],"reviewScore":null,"reviewSummary":null,"trust":{"provenance":"trusted-source-unreviewed","notice":"Community-authored content, reproduced verbatim and not vetted as instructions.
