See
/audit-csrf
.
\n
\n
Step 2: Install and define the storage
\n

pnpm add @pracht/session\n

\n

src/server/session.ts
:
\n

import { serverEnv } from \"@pracht/core/env/server\";\nimport { createSessionStorage, type SessionRequestContext, type SessionStorage } from \"@pracht/session\";\n\nexport interface AppSession extends Record<string, unknown> {\n  userId: string;\n  email: string;\n  name: string;\n  notice: string;\n}\n\nexport type SessionContext = SessionRequestContext<AppSession>;\n\nlet storage: SessionStorage<AppSession> | undefined;\n\n// Built lazily, NOT at module scope. Add
rolling: true
to
createSessionStorage()
if the\napp wants
maxAge
as an idle timeout instead; the cost is a
Set-Cookie
per\nresponse and, with a store, a write per request.
\n
For a store, pass
store: { get, set, delete }
— three methods over KV, D1,\nRedis, or Postgres.
createMemorySessionStore()
is for tests only.
\n
Type
context.session
once, in
src/env.d.ts
:
\n

import type { SessionRequestContext } from \"@pracht/session\";\nimport type { AppSession } from \"./server/session.ts\";\n\ndeclare module \"@pracht/core\" {\n  interface Register {\n    context: SessionRequestContext<AppSession>;\n  }\n}\n

\n
Step 3: Middleware
\n
Two factories, and the difference is the whole point:
\n
\n

sessionMiddleware(storage)
— loads
context.session
, never blocks\n(an Augmenter, in
/audit-auth
terms).
\n

requireSession(storage)
— loads and gates: pages redirect to\n
loginPath
, API routes get
401
(a Gate).
\n
\n

src/middleware/auth.ts
:
\n

import type { MiddlewareFn } from \"@pracht/core\";\nimport { requireSession } from \"@pracht/session\";\n\nimport { sessions } from \"../server/session.ts\";\n\nlet gate: MiddlewareFn | undefined;\n\nexport const middleware: MiddlewareFn = (args, next) => {\n  gate ??= requireSession(sessions(), { loginPath: \"/login\" });\n  return gate(args, next);\n};\n

\n
Generate
src/middleware/session.ts
the same way with
sessionMiddleware
when\npublic routes or the API also need to read a session.
\n
Both commit after
next()
, so a loader downstream can
context.session.set(…)
\nand the cookie still lands on that loader's response. Never write user info\nonto
args.request.headers
— the client controls those, and the incoming\n
Request
is immutable on Cloudflare Workers.
\n
Step 4: Password hashing
\n

// src/server/users.ts\nimport { hashPassword, verifyPassword } from \"@pracht/session\";\n\nexport async function verifyCredentials(email: string, password: string) {\n  const row = await db.users.findByEmail(email.trim().toLowerCase());\n  if (!row) return null;\n  return (await verifyPassword(password, row.passwordHash)) ? row : null;\n}\n

\n

hashPassword()
is PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA256 — the only password KDF WebCrypto\nexposes, so it runs on every adapter. The stored string records its own\nparameters, so the iteration count can be raised later without invalidating\nexisting hashes. Never store a plain
SHA-256(password)
. On Cloudflare\nWorkers, measure a login against the plan's CPU limit.
\n
Step 5: Auth API routes
\n

src/server/redirects.ts
— the one gate for every request-derived redirect\ntarget. Never use a
startsWith(\"/\") && !startsWith(\"//\")
prefix check: URL\nparsing turns
\\
into
/
, so
/\\evil.com
passes it and lands off-origin.
\n

export function safeRedirectPath(value: unknown, base: URL, fallback: string): string {\n  if (typeof value !== \"string\" || !value.startsWith(\"/\")) return fallback;\n  try {\n    const target = new URL(value, base);\n    return target.origin === base.origin\n      ? `${target.pathname}${target.search}${target.hash}`\n      : fallback;\n  } catch {\n    return fallback;\n  }\n}\n

\n

src/api/auth/login.ts
:
\n

import { redirect, type ApiRouteArgs } from \"@pracht/core\";\n\nimport { safeRedirectPath } from \"../../server/redirects.ts\";\nimport { sessions } from \"../../server/session.ts\";\nimport { verifyCredentials } from \"../../server/users.ts\";\n\nexport async function POST({ request, url }: ApiRouteArgs) {\n  const form = await request.formData();\n  const email = String(form.get(\"email\") ?? \"\");\n  const password = String(form.get(\"password\") ?? \"\");\n\n  // The redirect field is user input — gate it, or this is an open redirect.\n  const target = safeRedirectPath(form.get(\"redirect\"), url, \"/dashboard\");\n\n  const user = await verifyCredentials(email, password);\n  if (!user) {\n    // `<Form>` only acts on 3xx (it follows `location`); a 401 JSON body is\n    // silently ignored and the user sees nothing happen.\n    return redirect(`/login?error=1&redirect=${encodeURIComponent(target)}`, { request });\n  }\n\n  const storage = sessions();\n  const session = await storage.getSession(request);\n  // Session fixation: rotate the id on every privilege change, before writing\n  // the user. Without it, an attacker who planted a session cookie in the\n  // victim's browser still holds a pointer to the session that just became\n  // authenticated. Required with a store; harmless and future-proof without.\n  await session.regenerate();\n  session.set(\"userId\", user.id);\n  session.set(\"email\", user.email);\n  session.set(\"name\", user.name);\n  session.flash(\"notice\", `Welcome back, ${user.name}.`);\n\n  // `commit` appends Set-Cookie; it never replaces one already on the response.\n  return storage.commit(session, redirect(target, { request }));\n}\n

\n

src/api/auth/logout.ts
—
POST
returning\n
storage.destroy(session, redirect(\"/\", { request }))
. Never a
GET
.
\n

src/api/auth/signup.ts
— same shape as login: validate (
email
present,\n
password.length >= 8
), redirect to
/signup?error=1
on failure, otherwise\n
hashPassword()
, insert the user, and issue the session.
\n
Step 6: Login and signup pages
\n

src/routes/login.tsx
:
\n

import { Form, type LoaderArgs, type RouteComponentProps } from \"@pracht/core\";\n\nimport { safeRedirectPath } from \"../server/redirects.ts\";\n\nexport async function loader({ url }: LoaderArgs) {\n  return {\n    error: url.searchParams.get(\"error\") === \"1\",\n    redirect: safeRedirectPath(url.searchParams.get(\"redirect\"), url, \"/dashboard\"),\n  };\n}\n\nexport function head() {\n  return { title: \"Log in\" };\n}\n\nexport function Component({ data }: RouteComponentProps<typeof loader>) {\n  return (\n    <section class=\"login\">\n      <h1>Log in</h1>\n      {data.error && <p role=\"alert\">Invalid email or password.</p>}\n      <Form method=\"post\" action=\"/api/auth/login\">\n        <input type=\"hidden\" name=\"redirect\" value={data.redirect} />\n        <label>Email <input type=\"email\" name=\"email\" required /></label>\n        <label>Password <input type=\"password\" name=\"password\" required /></label>\n        <button type=\"submit\">Log in</button>\n      </Form>\n    </section>\n  );\n}\n

\n
Generate
signup.tsx
analogously, posting to
/api/auth/signup
.
\n
Protected loaders read the session, never a header:
\n

export async function loader({ context }: LoaderArgs<SessionContext>) {\n  return { user: context.session.get(\"name\") ?? \"\", notice: context.session.get(\"notice\") ?? null };\n}\n

\n

get()
on a flashed key is the read that consumes it.
\n
Step 7: Wire the manifest
\n
Public routes in one group, protected routes in a group carrying the gate:
\n

export const app = defineApp({\n  shells: { public: \"./shells/public.tsx\", app: \"./shells/app.tsx\" },\n  middleware: { auth: \"./middleware/auth.ts\", session: \"./middleware/session.ts\" },\n  api: { middleware: [\"session\"] },\n  routes: [\n    group({ shell: \"public\" }, [\n      route(\"/\", \"./routes/home.tsx\", { render: \"ssg\" }),\n      route(\"/login\", \"./routes/login.tsx\", { render: \"ssr\" }),\n      route(\"/signup\", \"./routes/signup.tsx\", { render: \"ssr\" }),\n    ]),\n    group({ shell: \"app\", middleware: [\"auth\"] }, [\n      route(\"/dashboard\", \"./routes/dashboard.tsx\", { render: \"ssr\" }),\n    ]),\n  ],\n});\n

\n
Anything that reads the session must be
render: \"ssr\"
— its output is\nper-visitor. If the project already has a
defineApp({...})
, merge into it and\npreserve the existing shells, middleware, and routes.
\n
Step 8: Env
\n
Add
SESSION_SECRET=<generate with: openssl rand -base64 32>
to\n
.env.example
, and confirm
.env*
is gitignored. Secrets shorter than 16\ncharacters are rejected. To rotate, put the new secret first and keep the old\none for one release.
\n
Step 9: Verify
\n
\n

pracht typegen
(step 7 added routes);
pracht typegen --check
in CI.
\n
In
pracht dev
:
/dashboard
redirects to
/login?redirect=%2Fdashboard
; a\nsuccessful login lands on
/dashboard
; a failed one lands back on\n
/login?error=1
with the message rendered; logout posts to\n
/api/auth/logout
and clears the cookie.
\n

pnpm test
,
pnpm e2e
, and
pracht verify --json
all pass.
\n
Run
/audit-auth
and
/audit-csrf
to confirm the resulting posture.
\n
\n
Out of scope
\n
OAuth/OIDC protocol handling, 2FA, password reset, email verification, rate\nlimiting on the login endpoint, and authorization (roles/permissions).
